America’s Cup, Wishing I was there

June 8, 2007

The best I can do today- is follow the cup online and will share some of the links . If you have a special site or blog you follow to stay up on the race please share.

Head to Head - the boats
This maybe one of the best sites I have seen that stays up to date on race results. There’s stats section that shows number of past wins and gives a- % of chances to win- with 3 different wind speeds. A calendar of events and more.

Sail Magazine Blog
Here are some great articles on what’s going on in Valencia. Kimball Livingston has his own style of reporting on the what’s going on leading up to the Cup Race. I like his no hold back any punches writing style.

Emirates Team New Zealand
Nothing about these yachts are left to chance. They are big and fast and crews must be skilled and highly trained to handle them for peak performance.

Virtual Sailor the game
I’m not much of a gamer or virtual world player, but I love to sail and this is the best way I can (virtually) be part of the action. I’m pretty careful about what I down load, but I feel safe going to download.com to test any software utilities and in this case a game.

I expect to have more updates before and during the race.
Please add any links you like.

Barbados crop-over Carnival and Grand Kadooment!

June 3, 2007

Dates July 7th to August 6th, 2007

Barbados Carnival, by David Howell

Lasting for approximately 5 weeks, and starting in July, Crop Over is a Barbadian festival celebrating the end of the local sugar cane crop harvest - hence it’s name.

It’s origins can be traced back to the 1780’s, a time when Barbados was the world’s largest producer of sugar. At the end of the sugar season, there was always a huge celebration to mark the culmination of another successful sugar cane harvest - the Crop Over celebration.

The finale is the Grand Kadooment! This carnival parade features large bands with members dressed in elaborate costumes to depict various themes. Designers compete for the coveted Designer of the Year prize while the revelers seem more intent on having a good time!

The Mount Gay Rum/Boatyard Regatta has been a part of the sailing world in Barbados for eighteen years. The well-known red hats are a prized souvenir and the sponsorship of Mount Gay Rum and the Boatyard have added a distinctive character to the festival.

The action begins on Thursday with registration, briefing and a rowdy barbeque at the Yacht Club. The racing begins on Friday morning.

At the end of every day is an awards presentation, with the biggest affair landing on Sunday evening. The carnival atmosphere is a big draw for everyone on the island and the final night’s festivities never seem to end!
